Staff Wanted More
Staff knew how to follow the district’s lockdown procedures, but they wanted more preparation for the decisions they might have to make.
Case Study · ALICE Training®
Sulphur Springs Union School District already had lockdown protocols, safety drills, and a close relationship with local law enforcement. But its teachers kept asking the same question: What else can we do?
With ALICE Training®, the district is preparing more than 900 employees with practical response options, hands-on training, and the confidence to make decisions during an active intruder event.
See how Sulphur Springs moved from lockdown-only procedures to an options-based response—and scaled that training across nine schools.

What's Inside
Most schools know how to “lockdown” in the event of an active intruder, but their response options stop at that. ALICE teaches that there is no one-size-fits-all response for every situation. Staff learn different strategies and tactics they can use based on what is happening around them, including lockdown, evacuation, barricading, and countering.

Four teachers from every school site became ALICE-certified instructors through ALICE’s train-the-trainer model—teachers training teachers.
Participants knew they could take breaks or step out when needed, with the trainer attentive to employees who might need additional support.
An instructor portal, monthly Ask Me Anything sessions, and continued guidance as instructors prepare for and deliver training.
Staff were learning to assess what was happening, understand their options, and make decisions in the moment.
Proof from the field
I can't say enough. I've never seen any training that equips you with the confidence and the knowledge.
Sulphur Springs was not starting from scratch. The district already had clear lockdown protocols in place, and Kawaguchi worked with local law enforcement to review those protocols and conduct safety walks. Staff also regularly participated in safety drills.
Today, staff are no longer limited to thinking about a single lockdown response. They are learning how to assess what is happening, understand the options available to them, and make decisions in the moment.
And for Kawaguchi, preparedness did not mean investing in extensive new equipment. Staff were learning how to respond using resources already available in their classrooms.
